CO2 Storage Investment aTlas for Europe - CO2SITE
CO2SITE is creating a free, authoritative and open-access CO₂ Storage Investment Atlas for Europe. The project brings together geological, technical, economic, regulatory and societal information to support strategic planning and informed decisions on geological CO₂ storage across the European Union and the European Economic Area.
Europe needs additional CO₂ storage capacity to support industrial decarbonisation and the development of carbon capture and storage value chains. Existing maps provide valuable information on where CO₂ storage potential may exist. However, early development and investment decisions require more than an estimate of theoretical capacity.
Storage developers, transport operators, industrial emitters, public authorities, investors and researchers also need information about:
- the quality and maturity of available data;
- storage capacity and injection performance;
- containment and monitoring;
- infrastructure and transport connections;
- costs and development risks;
- regulation and permitting;
- spatial planning and societal conditions.
CO2SITE responds to this need by moving beyond resource mapping towards an investment-oriented assessment environment.
The project builds on earlier European collaboration, particularly the Geological Service for Europe project, GSEU, and the European Geological Data Infrastructure, EGDI. CO2SITE expands this existing foundation through new data, harmonised methods and analytical tools.
The resulting Atlas will allow users to explore and compare potential storage opportunities and apply assumptions and priorities that reflect their own objectives. It will show which information and assumptions underpin an assessment and where uncertainties or data gaps remain.
The Atlas is intended to support early screening and comparison. It will not replace detailed site characterisation, licensing processes, environmental assessment or commercial due diligence.
