Connecting European information with regional development

CO₂ storage projects cannot be developed in isolation and must serve regional industrial decarbonisation plans. These plans will be required across Europe, and involve regional approaches with collaboration between countries and regions. Regional and local stakeholders will be key to the development of these plans. CO2SITE will work with these stakeholders. In prioritised areas, CO2SITE and stakeholders will cogenerate regional plans for transport and storage hubs.

CO2Site seek expressions of early interest from key stakeholders that will benefit from our support on further developing CO2 storage opportunities in their region.

These studies will bring together European-scale information and regional expertise. Subject to the requirements and available evidence in each region, they may consider:

  • potential geological storage resources;
  • industrial sources of CO₂;
  • transport options;
  • existing and planned infrastructure;
  • policy and regulatory conditions;
  • market and development factors;
  • stakeholder requirements and priorities.

From Atlas information to practical discussion

Taking outputs from across CO2SITE and from stakeholders, these regional studies can support development discussions by showing:

  • where insufficient information makes decisions difficult;
  • where further characterisation could improve storage readiness;
  • which transport or infrastructure connections warrant further examination;
  • which institutional, regulatory or market questions require attention;
  • how Atlas modules perform in realistic regional settings;
  • how potential storage sites, CO₂ sources and transport routes may interact.
The regional planning work will also provide opportunities to test and improve CO2SITE methodologies, data structures and user functions.

Transferable methods and lessons

Studies will focus on selected prioritised regions. Their value will extend beyond those areas. Shared methods, experience and lessons will inform other regions to use the Atlas and organise early planning for future CO₂ transport and storage development.

Final outputs will become available throughout the project on this website. Maps and descriptions will distinguish clearly between potential storage opportunities and licensed, characterised or commercially available storage sites.
