About CO2SITE
CO2SITE stands for CO₂ Storage Investment Atlas for Europe. It is a Horizon Europe Research and Innovation Action developing an open-access digital Atlas to support planning, policy and investment related to geological CO₂ storage.
Europe already has substantial knowledge about geological storage potential. However, this information is distributed across different sources, varies in coverage and detail, and is not always presented in a way that supports early development decisions.
Capacity alone does not determine whether a potential storage site can progress towards development. Other important considerations include:
- containment and injectivity;
- storage and injection capacity;
- the maturity and quality of available evidence;
- monitorability;
- infrastructure and transport connections;
- regulation and permitting;
- cost and risk;
- spatial constraints;
- societal and regional conditions.
CO2SITE uses the term investability to describe these connected considerations. The project brings geological and non-geological information together within a shared European framework while allowing users to examine storage opportunities according to their own requirements.
Our objective
The main objective of CO2SITE is to accelerate the implementation of CO₂ transport and storage hubs in the EU and EEA by supporting informed investment decisions.
To contribute to this objective, CO2SITE will:
- improve the coverage, accessibility and comparability of information on potential CO₂ storage sites;
- develop analytical tools for data interrogation and early site screening;
- support regional CO₂ transport and storage development;
- work with stakeholders to ensure that the Atlas responds to practical user needs;
- strengthen the scientific, policy and societal uptake of project results.
CO2SITE does not start from scratch. It builds on European cooperation and on CO₂ storage information developed through GSEU and made available through EGDI. This avoids unnecessary duplication and creates a pathway for released CO2SITE data and functionality to remain connected to Europe’s wider geological information infrastructure.
The project is relevant to storage and transport developers, industrial emitters, regulators, policymakers, investors, geological surveys, research organisations, civil-society organisations and other groups interested in the development of geological CO₂ storage in Europe.
