Geological Service for Europe

The Geological Service for Europe, GSE, is a long-term European service ambition for geological data, knowledge and decision support.
Europe faces societal challenges that depend on a sound understanding of the subsurface. These include:
  • climate mitigation;
  • energy security;
  • groundwater management;
  • mineral resources;
  • infrastructure;
  • the sustainable use of underground space.
Within this broader setting, CO2SITE contributes specialised information, methods and tools related to geological CO₂ storage.

From projects to durable services

GSEU is the current European project creating foundations for a future Geological Service for Europe. It supports this ambition through geological knowledge harmonisation, stakeholder engagement, strategic planning, digital services and cooperation among national Geological Survey Organisations.
EGDI provides the shared digital environment through which users can discover and access geological data, metadata, maps and services.
Together, GSEU and EGDI help move European geological information away from isolated, time-limited project outputs and towards more connected and durable services.

CO2SITE’s contribution

CO2SITE contributes to this landscape by:
  • expanding the European knowledge base for geological CO₂ storage;
  • developing methods for screening, assessment and comparison;
  • developing Atlas functionality for access through EGDI;
  • documenting relevant user needs, data gaps and methodological requirements;
  • creating a possible pathway for useful outputs to remain available after the project period.
The relationship with the future GSE is primarily about continuity. CO2SITE can contribute information, methods and functionality that may remain relevant after the funded project ends.
However, GSE is a future service ambition, while GSEU is the current funded project. CO2SITE’s connection with GSE should therefore be understood as a possible longer-term pathway, not as confirmation that every CO2SITE output has already been adopted as a future GSE service
