Moving beyond traditional resource mapping

CO2SITE is developing a European CO₂ Storage Investment Atlas that goes beyond traditional resource mapping. The Atlas will combine harmonised information on potential geological storage sites with analytical modules that help users understand expected performance, costs, risks and the wider development context.
The Atlas is intended to support the pre-commercial phase of storage development. During this phase, authorities, researchers, project developers and investors need credible and comparable information before detailed site characterisation, licensing and major investment begin.

Connected project objectives

CO2SITE’s main objective is to accelerate the implementation of CO₂ transport and storage hubs in the EU and EEA by supporting informed investment decisions. Four connected areas contribute to this objective.

Better and more accessible data: CO2SITE will improve the coverage, accessibility and comparability of information about potential geological CO₂ storage sites. Data from different sources will be brought together using shared structures and harmonised approaches.

Fit-for-purpose analytical tools: The project will develop analytical modules that convert available data into information that can support site screening and comparison. These modules will address subjects such as capacity, injection performance, techno-economic considerations and risk.

Regional development: CO2SITE will connect European-scale information with regional contexts. Regional development studies will examine how storage potential relates to industrial demand, transport infrastructure, regulation and stakeholder priorities.

Uptake and impact: Stakeholder engagement, communication, dissemination and exploitation are integrated into the project. This helps ensure that project outputs are understandable, accessible and relevant to their intended users.

Transparent use of information

The Atlas will draw on information and indicators related to:
  • static and dynamic storage capacity;
  • injectivity and containment;
  • pressure behaviour;
  • monitorability;
  • data availability and maturity;
  • infrastructure;
  • regulation and permitting;
  • development costs;
  • technical and non-technical risks.
The level of information available will vary between potential sites. CO2SITE will therefore make data quality, assumptions, limitations and uncertainty visible. The Atlas will not suggest that every storage opportunity is understood to the same level of detail.

A connected European pathway

CO2SITE forms part of a wider European pathway for geological information and services:
  1. GSEU develops the shared knowledge foundation. It brings together European geological expertise, harmonises information and improves access to knowledge on sustainable geoenergy, including CO₂ storage.
  2. EGDI provides the digital infrastructure. It enables geological datasets, metadata, maps and services to be discovered, connected and accessed.
  3. CO2SITE develops specialised investment-oriented intelligence. It expands the CO₂ storage knowledge base and develops tools that help users screen, compare and understand potential storage opportunities.
  4. The future Geological Service for Europe provides a possible continuity pathway. Useful data, methods and services may continue to be maintained and developed after the CO2SITE project period.

These elements form a connected ecosystem rather than a series of isolated projects. Data, standards, methods, expertise and user needs can be carried forward and strengthened over time.
